Insurance Claim Tips
General tips, not legal or insurance advice. Your policy wording decides what's covered.

What's usually covered — and not
- Often covered: sudden, accidental damage like a burst pipe or a water heater that suddenly fails
- Often not covered: slow leaks over time, wear and tear, and lack of maintenance
- Flooding from rising outside water usually requires separate flood insurance (e.g., through the National Flood Insurance Program)
- Mold coverage is often limited — read your policy
Steps that help your claim
- Stop the water and prevent further damage — policies usually require reasonable steps.
- Photograph and video everything before cleanup.
- Report the claim promptly and write down your claim number and adjuster's name.
- Keep damaged items (or photos of them) until the adjuster says you can discard them.
- Save every receipt — hotel, fans, emergency repairs.
- Get the restorer's moisture readings and photo report in writing.
